Artisan Patina: Giving Soul to Metal

By Atelier Ferdi

Beyond hot work, finishing is a crucial step that transforms a piece of metal into a unique work of art. Patina is one of our favorite techniques for enhancing wrought iron.

Unlike simple paint, patina is a controlled chemical treatment that reacts with the metal's surface. It doesn't cover it; it dresses it in depth, creating shades, transparencies, and a living texture that time will only enrich.

The Secrets of a Good Patina

The process begins with meticulous preparation: degreasing, sanding, and sometimes light heating to open the metal's pores. Then, we manually apply solutions based on metal salts, mild acids, or natural pigments. Controlling humidity, temperature, and application time is essential to achieve the desired result.

  • Hot patina: Applied to the still-warm metal, it penetrates quickly and creates deep, lasting effects.
  • Cold patina: Slower and more controllable, it allows for color layering and subtle gradients.
  • Wax finishing: Once the patina is dry, we often protect it with beeswax or a specific metal wax. This enhances the shine, protects from the elements for outdoor use, and gives a silky touch.

Each project is an opportunity to experiment. For a gate, we might choose an anthracite patina with bluish reflections, reminiscent of old steel. For an indoor staircase railing, a verdigris patina on brass will add a touch of antique elegance.

An Alliance Between Control and Letting Go

This is the whole paradox of this technique: we master the recipe, but we leave a part to the material itself. The metal has its own history, micro-imperfections, a slightly variable composition that influences the reaction. It is this collaboration with the material that guarantees that none of our pieces will ever be an exact copy of another.

Patina is ultimately the art of accelerating and guiding the natural aging of metal, to give it from the start the depth and character it would take years to acquire.
